Anthony's slogan: "Pizza Well Done"
First off, this is a well done pizza, if you have experienced true New York style pizza you know what I am talking about. Each pizza at Anthony's is delivered with just a bit of char on the bottom and side crust which delivers that taste of New York Pizza The char is created in Anthony's 800 degree coal burning ovens. So if you are one of those who just can't tolerate a "well done" pizza with a little char, Anthony's is not for you.
Secondly, many believe (as I do) that Anthony's provides one of the best (if not the best) pizza in South Florida. On my many visits to Florida I used to fly into Miami International Airport, but I have since changed by strategy by flying to Ft. Lauderdale Airport and being within a mile or two of one of Anthony's locations. On the walk to the rental car I begin to salivate and know that in less than five minutes I'll be at Anthony's.
As a traditionalist I generally order conservatively by just ordering a plain pizza. In terms of taste it is anything but plain... the combination of the flavors is perfect. Creamy mozzarella cheese, Italian plum tomatoes, romano cheese, fresh basic all drizzled with just a bit of olive oil... and of course a great "well done" crust pulling all the flavors together into a New York memory.
There are a variety of specialty pizza as well. The backup to my plain pizza features broccoli rabe and sausage, a wonderful alternative. There is also a frittata pizza featuring pepper, onion and egg (a little too far away from traditional for me), arugula, white, sauceless, etc. pizzas.
Pizzas can be made pretty quickly with an 800 degree oven. But prior to your pizza you should try Anthony's two other famous items. First off the Italian Salad with Gorgonzola cheese is a fresh and refreshing salad, perfect for sharing. At lunch they offer a smaller version which I have been able to order during dinner hours.
Anthony's coal oven roasted chicken wings are also a crowd favorite. They are served with grilled onions and are a great alternative to the deep fried and greasy wings available elsewhere.
All in all Anthony's is a great place with consistently great pizza (salads and wings, too) for those in South Florida. There are about 20 locations in Florida along with locations in Las Vegas and Philadelphia. More locations are coming to the New York/New Jersey areas.
I've not noticed any change in quality that often accompanies the addition of multiple locations. Hat's off to Anthony's owner Anthony Bruno.
